Compost Heap built out of spare parts
Being a vegetarian and
/ or eating healthy you end up with a lot of food scraps.
Throwing them in the trash is obviously no way to go,
so a compost heap is a handy item to keep in the back
yard or on the porch. I don't like the idea of buying
something like this so I looked around at my spare
parts. It's not very fancy, and it won't win any
awards, but it works, so I'm happy with it. It's
five years old as I post this and it's still in fairly
good shape.

|
Started with four metal shelves
that were too long and had been around too long.
I used a few bolts to secure them at the
top and bottom. Used three for the three sides

|
|
I wanted
the compost to fall through screens as it decomposed.
I used a damaged milk crate. Took the milk crate
to the table saw and was left with nice plastic
screens I could use as shelves.

|
|
Used some scrap wood for the base frame

|
|
Added a wire mesh and wheels since it will
sit on a concrete pad

|
|
Only needed to
drill a few holes. Used
zip ties that had been used before. Didn't think
they would last long but I built this almost
five years ago now and they are still holding
strong

|
|
Added some scraps of chicken wire to hold
things on the shelves

|
|
The idea is to
put the scraps on top. As the items decompose
they break down and fall through to the next
level. It pretty much works but I do put some
things into the middle shelf occasionally when
the top one gets full.

|
|
Added a door with a few left over hinges from other
projects
